Launching a 5-star mobile app
We developed the By Miles mobile app as the companion for all policyholders.
Guiding principles
While the app offered members a way to keep track of the cost of their car insurance each month, the aim was to make the entire experience of owning a car easier by putting all of their driving data at their fingertips and giving them access to a host of other tools.
This also built trust, as traditional "black box" insurance companies had earned a reputation (the clue's in the name) for collecting data and using it behind the scenes to penalise customers.
We showed our members we had nothing to hide, so they could access all of their data and use it to help make their lives easier.
Design & features
With the central timeline screen designed to resemble a credit card statement or utility bill, the app felt familiar and simple to use.
The other big point of potential friction was plugging our "Miles Tracker" (which does what it says on the tin) into their car. But with each member encouraged to download the app to follow simple onboarding instructions specific to their vehicle, while validating their mobile number in the process - we became the envy of other insurance companies, having sky high app penetration and validated phone numbers in case of a claim or incident.
When I was Head of Product, we launched a range of value-added tools for members in the app, including:
Find My Car - A tool to track down your car if you'd lost it in a supermarket or airport car park
Car Medic - A diagnostic scanner to check your car for faults, translated into Plain English
Journey Estimate - A calculator to check how much a trip would cost you in insurance, and fuel
Toll Charge Warnings - An automatic notification to let you know if you'd driven on a toll road, through a Congestion Charge or ULEZ Zone.
Low Battery Warnings - An automatic notification to let you know if your car battery is running low.
